The Descenders

Is there anything more exhilarating in cycling than the descent? The noise of the freewheel, the air rushing past your skin, and the feeling of pushing the limits to how long you dare not touch the brake lever. Some cyclists descend with so much speed and skill, their body guiding the bike around every corner, that I instantly want to saddle up and hit the longest quietest hill I can find to tear down. Enjoy...

Lovely.

I thought Hushovd's descent from the Aubisque on stage 13 of last year's Tour de France to take the stage win was brilliant too. I remember Sean Kelly not giving him a chance as he crossed the summit two minutes behind the leader! It was said that he was hitting 100km/h on the descent. Amazing.

Can't believe you've left Cunego from Tour de Suisse off the list! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtpQ_7Bj_YM

A glaring omission P, I will keep him back for volume two ;)

Nice post. Another descent of note is Sean Kelly sprinting down the Poggio to catch and ultimately pass Moreno Argentin to win Milan San Remo in '92:

Personally I can't descend for toffee. I'm more likely to be dropped in a race going down a hill than up it.
